Apple unveiled four iPhone 12 models during its Apple Event: the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. From inside and out and top to bottom, the iPhone 12 seems to be holding the upper hand over the previous model. Wondering whether it’s worth upgrading? Here are how the new iPhone 12 compares to the previous model, the iPhone 11.
Camera
The cameras on iPhone 11 and 12 are almost similar. Both feature 12MP rear dual cameras, 12MP front facing cameras and standard wide and ultra-wide shooters on tap. The iPhone 11 featured Night Mode, Deep Fusion and optical image stabilization, however the iPhone 12 offer Night Mode and Deep Fusion to the Ultra-Wide and front facing camera as well along with an improved HDR mode for challenging sceneries with dark and bright elements. The big addition is arguably that of Dolby Vision HDR video recording with night mode and time-lapse as additions. Users should however take not that the iPhone 12 can only record videos in 30 fps compared to the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max which can record at 60 frames per seconds.
Addition of 5G
The iPhone 11 models were strictly 4G, however the iPhone 12 models offer next-generation 5G cellular connectivity. 5G helps with faster downloads and uploads as it will deliver improved internet speed as well as other internet-based activities such as streaming, gaming, real-time interactivity and more. However, it should be noted that the 5G only works with a compatible data plan and if you are in an area where 5G coverage is available.
Design & Display
While the notched screen is maintained, the iPhone 12 has flat edges all around instead of the round frame. The latest model also features OLED Super Retina XDR display, compared to the iPhone 11’s LCD Liquid Retina HD display. The OLED display offers higher contrast and true blacks, HDR, nearly twice the peak brightness compared to iPhone 11 and systemwide color management for industry-leading color accuracy. The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini comes in five colors: white, black, blue, green and (PRODUCT)RED while the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max come in four colors: gold, silver, graphite and pacific blue.
Performance
Apple introduces the A14 chip for the iPhone 12. This is Apple’s first 5nm chip, compared to the 7nm for A13 bionic for its predecessor, which should result in better efficiency. The A13 was about 20% percent faster than the A12 chip so we should be able expect some greater performance from the A14 chip as Apple claims that it could provide up to 50% improved CPU & GPU performance, including 70% better Neural Engine performance.
