Compared to 2020, global smartphones shipments are forecast to reach 1.38 billion this year, which is an increase of 7.7%. 2021 would be marked as the strongest year-on-year growth that the smartphone market has seen since 2015, according to market intelligence firm, IDC. It is expected that the shipments will increase with a steady but lower rate until 2025, which is expected to top 1.5-billion-unit shipments that year.
After facing the challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdowns that occurred which affected the smartphone market in 2020, it is forecasted the market will continue growing as the market is back on track.
On one hand, the demand for mid-range and low-end 4G handsets is strong in emerging markets. On the other hand, in countries such as the US, Europe and China markets are slowly starting to migrate towards 5G, with a growing handset offer. However, it is to be noted that currently, this growth is only in the high-end sector.
Slower but steady growth is expected by IDC each year till 2025. However, the reported global shortage of semiconductors remains a major unknown for the industry. In 2021, the shipments of 5G smartphones are expected to grow by nearly 130%. As when in terms of market share, China alone is forecasted to account for nearly one in two 5G smartphones this year.
It is also to be noted that IDC expects in the year 2021, the average price of 5G Android devices will drop 12% year-on-year.
